Laos, little-known South East Asian country locally referred to simply as Lao. Its official name is Lao People's Democratic Republic.
Laos has an area of 236,800 sq km (91,400 sq miles) and is landlocked, surrounded by China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand and Myanmar. The mighty Mekong River is the main waterway of the country and the population is around 7 million people from 47 different ethnic groups.
Laos is one of the few truly exotic travel destinations left in the world.
